12th St Church

Church on E 12th Street near Union Square:

Off topic:
Since second grade, or thereabout, I have this unfortunate habit of mixing up "union" and "onion" while reading.  Just something I need to double check myself on because "Union of Guerrilla Fighters" is very different from "Onion of Guerrilla Fighters." (oh, Redwall, you are my childhood...)

Another trip to the Cloisters

Went back sometime in July.  It's really a beautiful place, especially along the when it's not sweltering.

Hudson (from memory, truthfully):

One of my college roommates (SG) was visiting, so a bunch of us decided to meet up to go (EC, MB, and myself).  It was frustratingly hectic: she came in at 34th and we were going to meet underground on the A Line at a certain time (to prevent us from waiting forever for someone forever only to find out they were on the other end of the platform, we would just meet at the Cloisters after that particular time).  EC and I left MB behind at the L Line (my fault), and then she didn't think we were meeting below ground at 34th, so we had to go up and fetch her.  Then we waited for SG, hoping she would find us before the departure time: she was wandering up and down the opposite side of the track and we called across to get her attention.  The last bit of misadventure was forty minutes down the drain spent waiting for the right train to arrive.  We got there eventually.

ICON7 in Providence

ICON is the big Illustration Conference that happens every two years (if you didn't know that, it's ok: I didn't know what it was until after I turned in my volunteer application).  Everyone who is Anyone is usually there.  People like Linda Barry, Matt Groening, Jillian Tamaki, Yuko Shimizu, Sam Webber, the people from Etsy, Victio Ngai, Soojin Buzelli, etc... BIG NAMES I HOPE THIS WILL BE MY FUTURE FAINT WITH NO DECORUM.

I was a volunteer (which means I didn't get to hear most of the talks because we were worked like the cheap-and-willing-student-slave-labor that we happen to desperately be).  But I did help with Fred Lynch's sketching workshop, and got to listen to a few other lectures (while I wasn't cutting out giant letters and posters, moving boxes, manning tables, and other things I can't remember).

Jillian Tamaki:

Sam Webber, Irene Gallo, Greg Manchess, Jon Foster:

P.S. I had no idea that Jon Foster was a RISD graduate...

Thursday, February 16

Here's a view on the Providence River at an industrial building: the city recently tore down a highway overpass that bridged the river at S. Main and Wickenden.  It's nice because there's more green space and you can see these old factory buildings (with arched windows... I have a terrible weakness for arched windows...).

I've been wanting to go sketch like I did in NYC, but as Providence is much less exotic and it also being February... predictably, I'm rather uninspired to go out.

Sunday, July 24

Went back to the Cloisters.  I spent a lovely two and a half hours wandering around and I want to go back before the summer's over.

On the way back to the apartment, I went to Borders for a last foray into book bliss (and discounts!).  I got Mistborn (Brian Sanderson) and The Monster of Florence (Daniel Preston).  Goodbye, Borders, I'll miss you.

Tuesday-Thursday, July 19-21

So... I've been really uninterested in what I've been sketching: doing a lot of the same stuff and can't really think of anything new yet.

Monday, July 11

It was getting really hot on Monday and I spent about an hour walking around trying to find something new, but I ended up back at Brooklyn Bridge Park sweaty and dehydrated.

(7-29-11: I can't believe this was over two weeks ago.  Emma and I usually take time to scan my sketchbook every week, but we just let things go this time 'round.)

Wednesday-Thursday, July 13-14

Went back up Park Avenue again.  This is looking towards Union Square (although you can't see it):

Same place on Park Avenue the next day, this time looking the opposite direction (towards Grand Central-42nd):

I've reverted to more subway people:

Since we ran out of bread, I bought a sandwich at a little cafe in Brooklyn and the girl behind the counter  goes to Johnson&Wales and apparently lives somewhere above the cafe (small world).

I drew these for imagery fodder for a product advertisement (for my internship).  Maybe they'll get used, we'll see.  If not, oh well...

Friday, July 8

I walked along 3rd Ave. from 21st Street to Battery Park and only got a little sketch out of it.  You can see the Statue of Liberty.  It was a very hot and hazy day, and by the time I was ready to go back it was going to rain:

Went to Brooklyn to sketch.  Hey, it's the Manhattan Bridge:

Thursday, June 30

Way up there on Park Avenue (looking towards Union Sq):

Sam, Emma, and Myken met me at powerHouse: there was an event for a book that had pages from a bunch of artists' sketchbooks.  Some of the artists were there and we could flip through the sketchbooks that they brought.  Then we went out to dinner in China Town at this place called Shanghai Cafe (really good food).  Here are some people (including Emma and Myken) on the sub from China Town to Myken's residence:

From Union Square (I really need to go farther in the morning):

Church on 15th (?) Street:

Event at The powerHouse Arena (where I intern... actually, I intern at powerHouse Books).  There was an event where author Gary Shteyngart came to read an excerpt from his book Super Sad True Love Story.  Images from that event can be found here.

Also, I download fonts to do little things for my internship (stuff for the websites and posters, etc).  I realized while making a slider for the Shteyngart Event that I had downloaded two fonts that look almost identical to my own handwriting...

Union Square (again) -- Success!

Monday, June 20

Union Square:

I need a new approach (you can tell I'm getting bored):

Saturday, June 18

I went to the Cloisters on Saturday, but, no, I did not go in (no cash on hand).  So I wandered around and did a nice 2 hour doodle at Fort Tryon until a photographer and his skimpily-clad models camped out in the middle of my sketch (dammit, you're blocking my light).

Sub-people:

Friday, June 17

It rained every time I went outside.  I went to the post office to get stamps and when I stepped out it was pouring and over to the West you could see lightning bolts streak across the sky...

Anyways, when there was a break in the torrential downpour I sketched our neighbor's garden patio:

Thursday, June 16

My sublet is two doors down from a police station.  I usually leave an hour earlier than I need to so I can do a little sketching, and this time a police officer (and his buddy) were leaving for duty at the same time or something.  Anyways, he stopped me and asked what the little green book was, and I think he enjoyed flipping through my sketchbook.  He recognized Union Square and the bank building from the previous day... makes me wonder if this is going to be a weekly occurrence.

After escaping the law: this is right next to the Flatiron (34th x 5th Ave and maybe Broadway?):
